Caribbean

Afro-Caribbean culture, a melting pot of Jamaican, Italian and Chinese immigrants, predominates the region. Delicious coconut fragrances, brilliant colors and tropical rhythms permeate the atmosphere.  Many of the locals work on banana plantations and on the ports of Limon and Moin. This is the second rainiest region of the country, after the South Pacific. Torrential rains coupled with high temperatures makes the region very humid throughout the year.
The extensive Caribbean plains are interwoven by several rivers. These rivers join canals in Tortuguero, a beach town that serves as a refuge for marine turtles to lay eggs. Tours to the Tortuguero national park depart from San Jose daily, and these packages include meals, transportation and short boat rides to observe the native flora and fauna of the region. A two night stay is recommended.

The region features small groups of houses within cassava, annatto and banana plantations. Other highlights include the beautiful beaches on the south coast with coral reefs and protected areas with small trails into the heart of the tropical forest.

In the Costa Rican Caribbean, there are options that suit every taste and interest. You can experience the wonders of the swamps, the abundance of marine life, the green lagoons, rivers, wide canals, and exotic beaches. For those who love fishing, diving, surfing and snorkeling, this place is, without a doubt, an earthly paradise.
