Radiographs (X-Rays)

We utilize two different types of radiographs, intraoral or periapical and bite wing films, and extraoral or what is commonly called panoramic (panorex) The intraoral films provide necessary detailed information including diagnosis of caries (cavities); periodontal disease and periodontal support; endodontic infections-teeth in need of nerve treatments; impacted and hopeless teeth, root tips requiring removal; as well as other types of pathologies.

The panorex film provides more of an overview and general information important in the diagnosis of different pathologies and abnormalities including temperomandibular joint dysfunction, malocclusions and malposition of the dentition and occlusal problems. This film also is useful in determining the treatment planning in implant placement

We are planning to include digital radiography which will provide us with more detailed pictures

Restorative Dentistry

Is defined by that branch of dentistry responsible for the eradication of decay and the placement of proper restorations (“Fillings”) with protective bases where needed. With the tremendous advancements in the field of Dental Materials, we can now achieve more esthetic results for our patients
We offer the finest quality of materials to restore the dentition while at the same closely matching the existing shade (color) of the tooth.
In our practice, we utilize a mercury free approach. We understand the problems resulting from mercury in amalgam fillings as well as keeping abreast of all the latest research on mercury vapors. Our goal is to provide the best possible care in the healthiest environment.

Root canal Treatments: Endodontic Therapy

The necessity of this treatment results from extensive destruction of the tooth from decay. The bacteria responsible for this breakdown of tooth structure affects the nerve tissue located in the nerve canal. Unfortunately, this condition is irreversible. The nerve becomes necrotic and must be removed.
Treatment includes the removal of all infected tissue in the canal, and sterilizing the area with special types of irrigating solutions and instruments. After the canal is prepared in this manner, it is filled with a special material called gutta percha which fills the space previously occupied by the nerve tissue.
It is important for the patient to understand that teeth treated with root canal therapy must be restored ‘internally’ with a reinforcing post and ‘outside’ with a crown (cap) or onlay (smaller type of metal or porcelain restoration). Once the nerve is removed from a canal, the tooth becomes very brittle and subject to fracture.

Periodontal Therapy: Gum Treatments

Maintenance of the gingival tissue (gums) is essential for good oral health and support of the existing dentition. When the patient develops periodontal disease, the tissues become inflamed because of the persistent presence of plaque, calculus and bacteria. This condition is known as gingivitis. Gingivitis may be described as acute, moderate, or severe depending on how long the inflammation is present. Over time, bleeding of the capillaries increases; the tissue appears red and swollen; bad breath or halitosis develops.
If this condition is not treated and allowed to persist, becoming chronic, a much more severe periodontal disease, periodontitis occurs. In this situation, bone loss supporting the tooth is evident and the tooth may become loose. The gum tissue will recede. If this condition of periodontitis becomes worse, the entire periodontal/bone support of the tooth is destroyed with the resultant loss of the tooth.
We recommend regular 3-6 month examinations including a thorough cleaning (prophylaxsis), to prevent periodontal disease.
If gingivitis develops, 2-4 appointments of deep cleanings may be necessary.
If periodontitis is experienced by the patient, special treatments will be necessary with a more extensive treatment plan which may include periodontal surgery.

Prosthodontics: Reconstructive Therapy

The specialty of prosthodontics refers to the rehabilitation, reaccomplishment of the masticatory apparatus with: Complete Dentures; Removable Partial Dentures; Crowns; Fixed Partial Dentures (Bridges); Implants. Inlays, Onlays, and Veneers are also included as part of the prosthodontist’s treatment plan.

The goal is to restore the dentition to proper function in harmony with the gingival tissues, muscles, and joints, while at the same time preserving the hard and soft tissues. Treatments are performed by specialists

Ref: Complete Denture: a removable dental prosthesis that replaces the entire dentition and associated structures of the upper or lower jaw.
Removable Partial Denture: any prosthesis that replaces some teeth in a dental arch. It can be removed whenever. The metal structure may be visible or hidden.
Fixed Partial Prosthesis: any dental prosthesis that is cemented, screwed or mechanically attached to natural teeth, tooth roots, and/or dental implant abutments.
Dental Implant: A prosthetic device made of a hard material that is placed into or upon the jaw bone to support a fixed or removable dental prosthesis.
Inlays/Onlays: restorations that restore parts of missing teeth including the occlusal surface.
Veneer; Facing: A veneer of any restorative material used on a natural tooth as a restoration to simulate a natural tooth.

All prosthodontics restorations/prostheses are made from the finest quality of materials utilizing the latest technical skills and equipment to fulfill the needs, requirements, and goals of the patient.
Our technician has more than 25 years experience in the US before establishing his laboratory in Costa Rica. He is an important part of our reconstructive and esthetic team.

Temperomandibular Joint Disorders/Treatments

Occasionally, some people will experience difficulty opening and closing their mouths. Pain will occur in the muscles responsible for performing these functions. The lower jaw may open and close with some distortion/deviation of this movement. The disc which is part of this joint, may make a clicking sound.
Such a condition must be treated to eliminate the dysfunction prior to any restorative dental treatments.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

This branch of dentistry is not limited to just the removal of badly infected, broken and impacted teeth. Our specialist in Surgery is an expert in Craniofacial disorders, Orthognathic repositioning of the jaws to correct severe malocclusions, excision of various soft and hard tissue pathologies, as well as the placement of implants and related procedures (bone grafts, maxillary sinus lifts).

Anesthesia

Three types of anesthetics are offered for patient comfort:
1.Local Anesthetic with and without vasoconstrictors
2.Nitrous Oxide (conscious Sedation)
3.General Anesthesia (administered by a specialist in anesthesiologia
